Best Place in Colorado to Ride a Bike: Eagle, Colorado
Eagle is one of those places that will pleasantly surprise you. It’s probably not on your seasonal mountain bike weekend trip itinerary, but it should be and here’s why:
Eagle is a high-desert town…code for an extended biking season and trails that are open into mid-December. Over 100 miles of single track mountain biking trails and paved recreational trails all accessible from your hotel room, campsite or downtown pub. Just minutes from Interstate 70, bikers will experience a verity of mountain terrain from winding high-desert single track to aspen groves and dense fragrant evergreen forests.
Eagle’s friendly mountain town vibe and growing bike culture will make you want to relocate or at least think twice before heading toward some of our more well-known neighboring resorts. Eagle is a place where you catch the mountain biking bug. Riders can start on beginner trails like Haymaker and Eagle Ranch Loops and then advance to the technical Mike’s Night Out – hard to get there but the downhill is worth the sweat. Eagle Ranch Loops is great for families and various skill levels. Riders can add more miles and create smaller or larger loops.
Start at Eagle Ranch and climb into alpine terrain, where trails like Firebox connect to a longer epic adventure gaining 3,000 vertical feet.
Not into dirt? Grab a cruiser bike and enjoy miles of paved recreation trails. Begin at the historic downtown and shop at few of the funky one-of-kind shops and then ride a leisurely one mile to Eagle Ranch Village for a spa treatment. (Guilty!)
Eagle Lands Notable Listing on National Geographic Top 20 List
Biking culture can be found all over the nation, but what makes Eagle’s biking culture stand out is the dedication to building trail improvements and programs that foster a love of the outdoors. Eagle was listed as one of America’s 20 Best Mountain Bike Towns by National Geographic.
Biking and Brews
Many biking trails are within distance to the quaint downtown area and local brewers. Start with a quick tune up or shop new gear at Mountain Pedaler located right downtown on 2nd and Broadway. Ride just a few miles out of town to hit the low mountain trailheads connecting to the greater trail system. End your day with a refreshing craft beer at Bonfire Brewing or 7 Hermits Brewing Company.
Eagle Locals Create Ultimate Trail Guide – Great Source for Bikers
Trail enthusiasts and Eagle residents Laura and Bob Turitz created a mountain bike trail guide book retailing at $20 to ease the frustration and educate mountain bikers on the various trails, terrain, level of difficultly and trail location. The easy to use guide book allows for newer off-road users to gain valuable information and plan a trip with ease. Trail descriptions review levels of difficulty and approximate time to complete. The online mapping tool is also helpful.
