Soar like an Eagle in Colorado
Visiting the high peaks and valleys of Eagle County in Colorado, you could be forgiven for taking one or two sharp intakes of breath. What’s not to impress? The dazzling scenery combined with the dazzling coloring of the fall foliage, that autumnal ‘nip’ in the air and the silence, broken only by the occasional call of the wild.
Fall into winter sports
Eagle is the very essence of Americana and although once dominated by mining and agriculture, it is now a hot tourist destination all year round. The rugged terrain which helped forge the spirit of America and tested those early explorers to the limits of endurance, now exert a new challenge for local residents and visitors alike.
As we look back over a summer of all terrain biking, trail running and hiking, a lot of white water rafting and not a little kayaking and canoeing, our thoughts now turn to the onset of winter. Winter can only mean one thing to lovers of the great outdoors.
Skiing.
Skiing is big in Eagle County. The Vail and Beaver Creek ski resorts are located no more than an hour’s journey from the local airport. The skiing on the slopes around Eagle is testing to every level of experience and to all ages. Regardless of whether you’re a young beginner or older beginner, the experienced, qualified instructors will guide you through the sharp learning curve of becoming a proficient, safe skier.
For skiers with more experience under their belt there are plenty of slopes which remain challenging, and of course for the more expert skier there are plenty of opportunities for skiing on virgin powder. The slopes will challenge you, but just as important you’ll have loads of fun, you’ll meet like minded folk and, like many do, you’ll strike up a friendship which you weren’t expecting.
If you’re new to skiing and are worried about equipment, don’t worry. You can rent equipment on a daily or weekly basis from many of the local stores or at the ski slope resort area.
In the fall and winter just like the summer the diversity of outdoor activities Colorado has to offer the visitor, especially in Eagle County is challenging to say the least. You can pit your wits against Mother Nature in so many ways, but unlike those early pioneers, you’ll not be far from civilization.
Find time to explore main street USA in Eagle. The town is home to a wealth of stores where you will be able to challenge your plastic to the max. Take time out to enjoy a coffee or something more substantial. If you cannot find the food you love in at least one of the restaurants, diners and bistros dotted around the town, then the food probably hasn’t been invented yet.
Eagle is the gateway to the high country. The challenges you can pit yourself and overcome are many, the home from home comforts welcoming and charming.
