 Explore the great terrain south of Eagle from the ground up at the 5th Annual Mushroom Fest!  Get the dirt on identifying our edible fungi and determine where and when to search for a wide variety of edible mushrooms in the high country.  The weekend offers unparalleled access to and discussions with leading mycologists; a truly interactive experience.  Join the Indiana Jones of all thing mushrooms, Larry Evans and Daniel Winkler, of Mushroaming Tibet eco-tour fame.  The two will lead educational classes, local expeditions and participate at the cookouts and dinners throughout the weekend.

Be sure to arrive in town for Friday evening, where our specialists share their stories of worldwide forays followed by an intimate mushroom-centric dinner.  The foraging kicks-off Saturday morning after an educational session on lesser known edible mushrooms of the Colorado high country.  Return in the afternoon with the fruits of your hunt for identification and a celebratory cook-off.

Sunday’s class features two choice edible mushrooms , the morel and chanterelle.  Mid-day, sharpen your foraging skills on the second hunt and return for and intimate Q & A session with Larry and Daniel.  The weekend concludes with a fun and interactive mushroom cooking class and demonstration featuring local chef Ryan Murray.

Admission to attend all weekend events is only $90.  Participants may also buy tickets for Saturday or Sunday only for $50 or pay a la carte pricing to attend one event.

Appetizers and refreshments are served while collected mushrooms are categorized and identified.  The fruits of the hunt are then grilled up and graded.  Mushrooms are provided from the hunt and backed up by our purveyor of fine organic mushrooms, Larry Evans.

An outdoor demonstration in the garden and cooking class featuring local chef Ryan Murray.  Chef Ryan will teach participants how to properly prepare and store mushrooms, offering creative ideas and recipes to utilize your bounty.  Chef’s mushroom duxelles, risottos and vegetarian dishes have won the acclaim of foodies and celebrity chefs alike!

MEET THE EXPERTS

Daniel Winkler
Daniel is the author of “A Field Guide to Edible Mushrooms of the Pacific Northwest” (Harbour Publishing 2011). He grew up collecting and eating wild mushrooms in the Alps and has been foraging for 15 years in the PNW, working as mushroom educator and guide. Daniel trained as a geographer and ecologist and works as a researcher and NGO consultant on environmental issues of the Tibetan Plateau and Himalayas [see www.danielwinkler.com]. Working in Tibet, Daniel realized that Tibet’s diverse mushroom industry plays a crucial role in rural Tibet. With his travel agency MushRoaming LLC he is annually organizing and leading several mushroom focused eco-tours to Tibet and South America

LARRY EVANS
Featured in the indy film sensation Know Your Mushrooms by Ron Mann, Larry is an avid mushroom hunter, mycologist, and educator.  He teaches workshops at the Glacier Institute in Glacier National Park, Madidi National Park in Bolivia, and leads mushroom hunting expeditions in Canada and Ecuador. He is founder of the Western Montana Mycological Association, a 501(c)3 nonprofit educational organization, writes for FUNGI magazine, and is  a contributing editor at the Journal of Wild Mushrooming.
